Germany Has Introduced New Requirements For Ukrainian Men

Men of draft age who have fulfilled their military service will be eligible for temporary protection.

Germany has changed the rules for granting temporary protection to some Ukrainian men of draft age. The new restrictions apply to men between the ages of 23 and 60 who arrived in the country after July 31, 2026. This was reported by DW, citing the German Ministry of the Interior.

The changes are related to the entry into force of the relevant provision of the EU Council decision. From now on, men of draft age who have fulfilled their military service obligations will be eligible for temporary protection. To qualify, they must confirm that they left Ukraine legally or have been exempted from military service.

At the same time, the new rules do not apply to men who were in Germany before July 31, 2026, and have already been granted temporary protection. For them, as for other Ukrainian refugees, their status is automatically extended until March 2028.

Ukrainian men of draft age who do not qualify for temporary protection but wish to remain in Germany may apply for asylum. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) will review such applications on a case-by-case basis.

At the same time, the German Ministry of the Interior has not ruled out the possibility of deporting those Ukrainians who do not have legal grounds to remain in the country.
