Naples Was Shaken By A Powerful Earthquake

Nothing like this has happened in southern Italy in 40 years.

On Friday, July 31, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.7 struck near Naples, Italy. The tremors caused power outages and damaged several buildings.

The earthquake struck at 7:46 p.m. local time. Its epicenter was in the Campi Flegrei area west of Naples, and the focus was at a depth of about 3 kilometers.

After the main shock, a powerful series of aftershocks began, continuing throughout the evening. At least 30 aftershocks were recorded. The strongest of these had a magnitude of 3.8 and occurred around 10:00 p.m.

The last tremor, with a magnitude of 1.6, was recorded at 12:03 a.m.

Buildings in Naples began to collapse, and rocks and debris rained down from the hillsides onto cars and railroad tracks.

The Italian fire department reported minor damage to buildings in the city and its surrounding areas. As a precaution, local authorities temporarily suspended commuter train and subway service.

Pozzuoli suffered the most damage. On Pergolesi Street, a section of a residential building’s wall collapsed. Large chunks of volcanic tuff fell onto parked cars and damaged them.

There are also reports of numerous falling cornices and pieces of plaster in Pozzuoli and the Bagnoli area.

According to the latest reports, at least 21 people were injured, and two are in serious condition.

At the Palatrincone temporary shelter in Pozzuoli, 185 beds have already been set up for people who cannot return home.

According to Italian media reports, this is one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded in the area and the strongest in the last 40 years. It exceeded the previous record earthquake, which had a magnitude of 4.6 and occurred on June 30, 2025.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is monitoring the situation. The head of the Civil Protection Department, Fabio Cicilliano, has convened a crisis management team to coordinate rescue efforts.
