Three Sites For Nuclear Waste Storage Have Been Identified In Belarus

One of them is near the BelNPP.

Belarus has identified three promising sites for the construction of a radioactive waste disposal facility. This was reported by Director of BelRAO Mikhail Kisel during the round table, BelTA informs.

One of the sites is located near the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Astravets district. The second one is in Mstislavl district, and another one is in Khoiniki district, near the Polessky State Radiation and Ecological Reserve.

According to Mikhail Kisel, specialists are now preparing a report on the environmental impact assessment of the future radioactive waste disposal site. After that, a procedure of public discussions will be held.

At the same time, the company is already holding explanatory meetings with residents of the areas where the prospective sites have been identified.

According to Mikhail Kisel, the disposal site is a high-tech engineering facility that will have a multi-barrier structure and will ensure safe storage and disposal of waste for decades, as long as radiation activity persists.

For this purpose, if necessary, the waste is mixed with cement material, placed in a safe and secure environment.
