Germany will also allocate an additional 400 million euros for weapons for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Germany and Ukraine have laid the groundwork for the joint development of an air defense system designed to counter ballistic missiles. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the signing of the relevant agreement at a meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine and NATO defense ministers in Brussels on Thursday, June 18, according to DW.

“Several German companies have expressed interest in this project. It could make an important contribution to the security of Europe and Ukraine,” he noted. At the same time, the German minister emphasized that such cooperation has long ceased to be one-sided, pointing to Ukrainian innovations and expertise.

At the same time, Pistorius announced the provision of an additional $400 million in military aid to Ukraine. Half of this amount (equivalent to approximately 174 million euros) will be allocated through the PURL mechanism (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List). — Ed.) for the procurement of U.S. weapons, which has been in effect since the summer of 2025 under an agreement between NATO and U.S. President Donald Trump.

In addition, Berlin will allocate $200 million for the purchase of guided missiles for the Patriot air defense systems.

According to Pistorius, Germany, which co-chairs the Contact Group on Ukraine with the United Kingdom, is taking a leading role in providing Kyiv with new military aid. “With this step, we want to encourage other members of the Contact Group on Ukraine’s defense to also participate in financing the procurement of PAC-3 guided missiles,” he emphasized.

Under the PURL program, NATO countries and their allies can purchase arms packages for Ukraine from the United States, each worth $500 million. Germany has previously participated in the acquisition of three such packages. Other countries, including Sweden, Canada, Norway, and the Netherlands, have also announced the purchase of additional weapons for Ukraine, which is defending itself against military aggression by the Russian Federation.
