Moldova has become another candidate for EU membership.
The European Union and Ukraine officially launched accession negotiations at an intergovernmental conference in Luxembourg. Moldova has also become a candidate for EU membership, according to the European Commission’s press service. Both countries officially became candidates for EU membership in 2022.
Hungary lifted its veto on Ukraine’s EU accession on June 13. In 2024, the European Union began negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, but Viktor Orbán vetoed the start of the actual process for Kyiv.
In December 2025, Ukraine and the European Commission agreed on a 10-point plan that the country must fulfill to join the EU. As The Guardian reported, these points mainly concern the fight against corruption. According to European officials interviewed by the publication, Kyiv has currently implemented 15% of the promised reforms. The agreement provides for extensive amendments to the country’s Criminal Procedure Code, strengthening the independence of NABU and SAPO (anti-corruption agencies), as well as reforming the procedures for appointing judges and prosecutors.
