European officials believe that Ukraine now has some leverage.

European leaders at the G7 summit plan to convince U.S. President Donald Trump that Ukraine is currently in a strong position.

This was reported by Politico.

Unnamed French officials told the publication that the key topic of the summit will be the US and Israel’s war with Iran, as well as the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.

Despite this, participants will also address the issue of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Five French officials told Politico that the goal is not so much to reach major agreements as it is to keep Trump engaged in discussions about Russia’s war against Ukraine.

In particular, French President Emmanuel Macron, whose country is hosting the summit, plans to emphasize that Europe is taking on a greater role in the context of aid to Ukraine. At the same time, the meeting will be considered a success if Trump does not actively undermine Kyiv’s position.

“Europeans are funding nearly 100% of aid to Ukraine. It is important that other G7 partners, especially the U.S., at the very least do not worsen their stance toward Ukraine,” noted a representative of Macron’s administration.

They will also try to convince Trump that Ukraine has now gained the upper hand on the battlefield.

“Trump loves winners. Last year, Zelenskyy didn’t have any strong cards. But the situation has changed,” said an unnamed French diplomat.

He pointed to the EU’s €90 billion loan, the Russian army’s difficulties on the front lines, and Kyiv’s defense cooperation with Gulf countries.

Politico noted that the French president has taken a number of diplomatic steps to maintain Trump’s favor. In particular, the summit date was changed to accommodate the American leader’s birthday, and a gala dinner will be held for him at the Palace of Versailles following the conclusion of official events.

French officials told Politico that the two leaders now speak regularly by phone, indicating an improvement in relations following a prolonged period of tension.

Diplomats note that Macron’s direct and ambitious style is well-suited for dealing with Trump, with whom they already have experience working together during his first presidential term.
