"The Time For Illusions Is Over": Pressure Mounts On Putin In The Russian State Duma

An increasing number of Russian public figures want the war to end.

Russian State Duma Deputy Vyacheslav Markhaev sharply criticized the Kremlin’s “ineffective leadership” and demanded a plan to end the war in Ukraine. He is convinced that Russia is on the brink of a “social explosion”.

In his appeal to the Kremlin, Markhaev mentioned a number of problems in Russia, including corruption, oligarchy, and the loss of “the most active and reproductive segment of the population.” The Russian lawmaker also highlighted the consequences of Ukrainian drone attacks, which are creating additional problems, the publication reports The Telegraph.

“The time for illusions is over. The country is on the verge of a social explosion, and the blame for this will fall entirely on the current government,” Markhaev declared in his tirade.

The Communist Party deputy warned that if the situation does not change in the near future, the Kremlin should expect an increase in social unrest and chaos in the country.

“The West will inevitably take advantage of this to destroy what remains of Russian statehood,” Markhaev emphasized.

The circle of Russian figures calling for an end to the war is growing wider

The publication notes that Markhaev has become yet another politician in Russia to deviate from the government’s official line. In late May, another deputy from the same party, Renat Suleimanov, warned that the Russian economy was on the brink of collapse and called for an end to the war in Ukraine. Suleimanov stated that the Russian economy would not withstand the continuation of the “special military operation.”

In March, Russian blogger Ilya Remeslo, who had been a staunch supporter of the Kremlin, suddenly spoke out against dictator Vladimir Putin and called for his resignation, labeling him a “war criminal.” Remeslo called the war in Ukraine “completely dead-end.”

Dissatisfaction with the Kremlin’s policies has been growing over the past few months, writes The Telegraph. The reasons for this include internet restrictions, the slow advance of Russian troops on the front lines, and Ukrainian drone strikes deep into Russian territory.
