ESU Has Announced Support For Students, Faculty, And Their Families

The response system operates in three areas.

The European Humanities University has announced that it is expanding its support measures for students, faculty, and their families after Belarusian authorities designated the university as an “extremist organization.”

The university’s statement notes that the administration is aware of cases of searches, interrogations, and intimidation of people associated with EHU. In response, the university, seeking to ensure safety and create conditions for the study and professional activities of Belarusians, “has intensified cooperation with Lithuanian government agencies, international partners, diplomatic missions, and civil society organizations.”

The response system operates in three areas:

ensuring the continuity of the educational process;

to provide practical assistance to affected members of the university community;

to strengthen the long-term sustainability and security of the University of Grodno.

To this end, the university has already streamlined academic administrative procedures, prepared housing options for students should they need to relocate to Lithuania, and established additional counseling services.

ESU reported that it is also cooperating with government agencies and diplomatic missions on issues related to visas, residence permits, and ways to assist those who may need to leave Belarus.

Access to legal assistance (with the participation of independent human rights experts) and psychological support has been further expanded, and cybersecurity and data protection measures have been strengthened.

ESU Rector Vilius Šadauskas emphasized that the well-being and safety of students, faculty, university staff, and their families are an “unconditional priority.”

He also stated that the university remains committed to academic freedom, quality education, and scientific research.

And despite external pressure, Šadauskas added, EHU “continues to fulfill its mission with the support of international partners, Lithuanian authorities, and the academic community.”

As a reminder, in April 2026, the Belarusian authorities designated the European Humanities University and its structural units as an “extremist organization.” About 100 people withdrew shortly thereafter.
