Serbian President Vucic Announced His Possible Resignation
Aleksandar Vucic

The country is engulfed in protests.

Serbian President Alexander Vucic said that he may resign in the near future. He told reporters in Beijing ahead of a visit to China, N1 writes.

"My mandate is about to expire and I might resign," Vucic said. He was first elected in 2017 and re-elected in 2022, with his term expiring in 2027.

The announcement came amid new protests in Serbia. On the evening of May 23, a "Students Win" rally was held in the center of the Serbian capital. After it ended, clashes between protesters and police broke out outside the parliament building, where supporters of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party were present. Vucic estimated the number of protesters at 30500-34300. He called on opponents for dialogue and blamed the organizers for the incidents after the rally ended - pyrotechnics, stones and metal bars were used against police during the riots.

Protests in Serbia have been ongoing since November 2024 after the collapse of a train station canopy in the city of Novi Sad. Sixteen people were killed then. The protesters accuse the authorities of insufficient security control, corruption and demand early parliamentary elections.
