Britain has protested to the Russian side.
A British Rivet Joint reconnaissance aircraft was performing a routine flight over the Black Sea in international airspace when it was dangerously intercepted several times by Russian fighter jets. This was reported on May 20 by the press service of the British Ministry of Defense.
According to the department, last month one Russian Su-35 came so close that emergency systems on board the British aircraft went off, in particular the autopilot was disabled. Another Su-27 fighter made several passes in front of the plane, coming about 6m closer.
Despite the incidents, the RAF crew continued with the mission and did not change route. The plane was unarmed and was on a reconnaissance mission with NATO allies.
The kingdom called the actions of the Russian pilots dangerous and unacceptable and said it had already protested to the Russian side. British Defense Minister John Healey stressed that the incident would not force the country to withdraw its support for NATO.
"This incident is yet another example of dangerous and unacceptable behavior by Russian pilots against an unarmed aircraft operating in international airspace. Such actions pose a serious risk of accidents and potential escalation," Healy said.
The British side said it was the most serious such incident since 2022. The ministry pointed out that the intercepts came just days after reports from the defense secretary about suspicious Russian submarine activity near critical submarine infrastructure in the North Atlantic, where British forces were conducting operations with allies to protect it.
