How the Ukrainian station in Antarctica lives.

Ukraine continues to ensure the operation of the Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky" even during the war with Russia, considering its presence in Antarctica as an element of geopolitical strategy and defense of national interests. This is reported by Politico in a May 8 publication.

The station is located almost 16 thousand kilometers from Kiev, on the Antarctic Peninsula. The material is entitled: "The strangest front line. How a mint-green research base, 14 scientists and a colony of sub-Antarctic penguins became part of Ukraine's military strategy."

A Ukrainian scientific team led by meteorologist Anzhelika Ganchuk is currently working at the station. According to her, even a short-term shutdown of the base - at least for a year - could lead to the actual loss of the station and weaken Ukraine's position in the Antarctic management system.

In February, Kiev approved a new polar strategy, calling its presence in Antarctica "a platform for protecting national interests." Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga said the country's participation in Antarctic projects strengthens Kiev's international position and helps counter Russia's policies.

The Ukrainian side considers the Antarctic program not only as a scientific activity, but also as part of the global confrontation with Russia. The authorities emphasize that maintaining a presence in the region allows Ukraine to participate in international decisions and not cede strategic positions to Moscow even far from the main conflict.

After the outbreak of full-scale war, as Politico notes, the politicization of work within the Antarctic Treaty has intensified. According to the publication, Western countries generally support Ukraine, while Russia and China regularly block environmental initiatives. It is also reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump has effectively stopped participating in an informal group supporting Ukraine in Antarctic discussions.
