The German Chancellor called the conversation a good one.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump after weeks of tension over his criticism of US policy in the Middle East. The conversation, which took place on Friday, May 15, was reported by the head of the German government on social network X.
At the time of the call, Trump was on board a plane returning from a visit to China. During the conversation, the two sides discussed the situation around Iran, the war in Ukraine, and NATO-related issues, writes "Deutsche Welle".
Merz said the positions of Berlin and Washington coincide: Iran should return to the negotiating table, the Strait of Hormuz should be unblocked, and Tehran should not get nuclear weapons. "We are united," the chancellor stressed.
Tensions between the allies escalated in late April when Merz criticized US actions, saying there was no "obvious strategy" and accusing Washington of "humiliating an entire nation" in talks with Tehran. Trump then responded sharply, saying the chancellor "doesn't know what he's talking about" and also hinted at a lack of support from Germany and other NATO partners. In early May, the U.S. leader announced the withdrawal of several thousand U.S. troops from Germany.
On May 15, Trump wrapped up his visit to China. According to him, Chinese President Si Jinping expressed willingness to facilitate the opening of the Strait of Hormuz, which has effectively been blocked by Iran. In addition, Beijing promised not to provide Tehran with military support.
In Berlin, the telephone conversation was perceived as a signal to normalize relations and confirmation that Washington does not intend to bring differences to a serious conflict, remaining interested in constructive cooperation with Germany.
