Congress has been notified of this.

On Friday, May 1, US President Donald Trump told Congress that the war with Iran is over.

This is reported by Politico.

The publication notes that the American president is thus trying to put an end to the debate about the need for Congress to approve the conflict.

Politico obtained a letter in which the White House outlined its position. The conflict in the Middle East has now reached the 60-day statutory deadline for operations to cease unless lawmakers authorize the use of military force.

Trump said the cease-fire with Tehran effectively stops that deadline.

"There have been no exchanges of fire between the United States and Iran since April 7, 2026. Hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have ceased," the American president emphasized.

The purpose of Trump's message

The publication notes that the message is intended to prevent the fight from escalating on Capitol Hill, where Trump faces the prospect of losing Republican support as the war drags into its second month without a clear exit strategy.

The White House's reasoning, however, will not endear it to Democrats and some Republicans, who argue that the administration should wind down the campaign because it has reached that point.

The letter also came amid stalled negotiations and an ongoing military blockade of Iranian ports.

Today, Trump told reporters before leaving the White House for Florida that he had presented Iran with a "final proposal" but expressed pessimism about the possibility of reaching an agreement with the country's "fractured" government.

"They've made some progress, but I'm not sure they'll ever reach the goal. I would say I'm not satisfied ... they want to make an agreement, but I'm not satisfied," he said.
