A New Defense Alliance In The Middle East

A New Defense Alliance In The Middle East

As recently as six years ago, one of these countries did not recognize the other.

Israel has urgently dispatched advanced weapons systems, including the advanced Iron Beam laser, to the UAE to help defend the country against Iranian missiles and drones. This was reported by the Financial Times newspaper, citing sources.

In addition to the laser, Israel handed over to the UAE a lightweight Spectro surveillance system capable of detecting approaching drones, including Shaheds, at a distance of up to 20 kilometers. Along with the Iron Beam and Spectro systems, several dozen Israeli soldiers were sent to the UAE to maintain the equipment.

The FT reports that the deployment of the laser and surveillance system was one of the first large-scale examples of defense cooperation between countries that did not have diplomatic relations before the 2020 Abrahamic Accords.

The reason for the cooperation was that the UAE took the brunt of an Iranian strike during a joint US-Israeli operation against Tehran. Only more than 500 ballistic missiles and 2,000 drones were fired at the monarchy. Most of them were intercepted by air defense systems, including Israeli ones.

Before August 2020, the UAE did not officially recognize Israel's right to exist and the two states did not officially have diplomatic or economic ties.
