He has managed to shoot down over 300 attack drones so far.
The An-28 is an 18-seat light passenger airplane produced from 1978 to 1993. The Ukrainians converted one such plane to hunt Shahed-136 drones: engineers attached several P1Sun and Sting interceptor drones under the wing, writes Bild.
When a raid begins, the plane takes off and starts chasing enemy UAVs. When approaching the target, the drone operator, who as a "passenger" is right on board the An-28, activates the interceptor drone and sends it into battle.
The Ukrainian military has already managed to shoot down more than three hundred Russian attack drones in this way. The advantages of this tactic are low costs (one interceptor costs from one to three thousand euros) and minimal risk for the drone's crew and operator. Austrian military expert Gustav Gressel praised the engineers' solution in X:
"The aircraft gives the drones kinetic energy at the expense of altitude and speed, which makes the interception process more efficient and increases the range of the drones. This is especially important against high-flying jet-powered Shahed."
