Because of a quarrel with the Pope.
Louisiana Republican Senator John Kennedy, considered a longtime supporter of US President Donald Trump, criticized his conflict with Pope Leo XIV, calling it a "distraction," writes The Guardian.
The MAGA-supporting politician condemned Trump's harsh rhetoric against the pontiff and characterized what is happening as a "holy war."
"I love the president like a taco. I don't always agree with him, but I think he wants a better world. However, I don't support this new 'holy war' with the Pope," Kennedy said.
His wording could cause displeasure with Trump, as the word taco is used by his critics as an acronym for the phrase Trump always chickens out.
The senator also emphasized that he respects Catholicism and noted that the Pope is entitled to his own position.
"Why do we even want to fight with the Pope? It's a distraction, and the press just drags it in like a Hoover Deluxe vacuum cleaner," he added.
April 12, Donald Trump criticized Pope Leo XIV on his Truth Social media page, saying he is "weak on crime and terrible on foreign policy."
