Expert Explains Zelensky's "Venezuelan" Hint For Lukashenko

Why is the topic back on the agenda?

President Vladimir Zelensky warned of Russia's attempt to drag Belarus into war again and warned Alexander Lukashenko's regime against making mistakes, recalling recent events in Venezuela.

What is really behind the Ukrainian president's hint and what is Minsk's goal with Moscow, RBC-Ukraine asked Dmitry Zhmaylo, executive director of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation.

What Russia is up to in Belarus

The next attempts of Russia to create a threat for Ukraine from the territory of Belarus are not something new, the expert said in a conversation with RBC-Ukraine.

"When the Russians resist on the front, when they fail to provoke a crisis, when the advance of the Russian army is minimal, the topic of Belarus is immediately included. "Then 'Oreshnik', then exercises, then some statements," reminded Zhmaylo.

The main goal is to force Ukraine to keep thousands of military personnel on the border with Belarus. In this way, the occupants are trying to prevent the AFU from transferring reserves to the hottest directions, in particular near Pokrovsk or Konstantinovka, the expert explained.

According to Zelensky, Ukrainian intelligence records that the development of roads to Ukraine and the establishment of artillery positions are underway in the border area of Belarus.

"As for the construction of roads, it will not happen quickly. They are also failing the project of their so-called Azov Ring in the occupied territories. They only carry out current repairs of those roads, the most critical sections. But the art positions are just this game with us," commented Zhmaylo.

Signal for Lukashenko

The nature and consequences of the recent events in Venezuela should deter the leadership of Belarus from making mistakes, warned the president of Ukraine yesterday. The public perceived such a message as a hint that Lukashenko may repeat the fate of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, who was kidnapped by the U.S. intelligence services.

According to the expert, Zelensky's statement is due to the fact that Lukashenko's regime continues to fuel anti-Ukrainian hysteria inside the country to preserve its own power.

"There is hysteria about "all-powerful Ukrainian intelligence services." That is why the president gives a very clear message: such events (as in Venezuela - ed.) can happen if the Ukrainian intelligence is so 'omnipotent and insidious'," Zhmaylo explained.

This statement, according to the expert, should weaken Minsk's desire to facilitate the plans of the Russian Federation and prevent the opening of new "hot" areas.

"So this is a clear message that there will be no physical crossing of the state border as in 2022," he emphasized.
