The U.S. president's abrupt statement contradicted the terms of the truce.
US President Donald Trump has sparked an outcry with his statement that Israel should no longer carry out airstrikes on Lebanon. His abrupt post has caused surprise and concern within the Israeli leadership.
According to Axios, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his team were shocked by Trump's wording, which contradicts the terms of a recently agreed truce.
The US had earlier announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. Under the agreements, Israel pledged to refrain from offensive operations but retained the right to self-defense in the event of threats.
Trump, however, wrote: "Israel will no longer bomb Lebanon. The U.S. has forbidden them to do so." In the interview, he added that he would not allow further strikes and insisted on their complete cessation.
Israel's reaction
Sources say the Israeli side learned of the statement from the media and immediately turned to Washington for clarification. In particular, Israel's ambassador to the United States Yehiel Leiter sought to clarify whether this meant a change in United States policy.
The White House later clarified that the agreement remains in force: Israel is not to conduct offensive operations, but can act in self-defense.
Despite the truce, the situation remains volatile. On Friday, an Israeli drone struck southern Lebanon. The Israeli side said it was acting in response to a silence violation by Hezbollah.
