British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said that "as soon as conditions permit," France and Britain will launch a purely defensive military mission to "protect freedom of navigation" in the Strait of Hormuz.

Starmer said the defense mission would focus on demining and protecting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz area.

"We have agreed to accelerate our military planning. I can confirm that, together with France, Britain will lead a multinational mission to protect freedom of navigation as soon as conditions allow. This will be an exceptionally peaceful and defensive mission designed to give confidence to civilian vessels and support mine clearance efforts," Starmer said.

Restoring the operation of this important waterway must be based on a "long-term and realistic proposal," he said.

"Opening the strait is a global necessity and a global responsibility. We must act to once again allow the free flow of global energy and trade to bring down prices for working people. Our citizens need to see a return to peace and stability, and we will do all we can," the British prime minister said.
