Trump Names A Way To Bring Tehran Back To The Negotiating Table

The U.S. will keep up the pressure.

US President Donald Trump said during a dinner with Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima on April 13 that he intends to bring the war in Iran to an end as soon as possible. This is reported by The Wall Street Journal.

According to the publication's sources, at the meeting at the White House, Trump emphasized that the only way to bring Tehran back to negotiations is to increase pressure. At the same time, the WSJ notes, the Netherlands has previously refused to support the US idea of blockading Iranian ports.

Prime Minister Rob Yeaten told the US leader that European allies are ready to form an international coalition to secure the Strait of Hormuz, but only after the fighting is over. He added that the dinner turned out to be "too short to convince each other, but long enough to better understand the positions of the parties."

According to the publication, the meeting showed the complexity of the situation in which Trump finds himself: on the one hand, he talks about the "almost complete end" of the war, on the other hand, he is trying to increase economic pressure on Iran. The US president also promised to name the countries ready to join the blockade, but none of them publicly supported the initiative, and the list itself was not presented several days later.

Despite Trump's optimistic statements, a number of officials and experts believe that Iran may need months or more to feel significant economic pressure and make concessions.
