NATO Secretary General: Ukraine's Arms Procurement Plan Will Be Fulfilled

NATO Secretary General: Ukraine's Arms Procurement Plan Will Be Fulfilled
Mark Rutte

Germany has already announced that it will supply Kiev with hundreds of missiles for Patriot SAMs.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is optimistic about financing U.S. arms purchases for Kiev. "I am confident that we will be able to finance the flow of supplies from the United States," he said on Wednesday, April 15, after a meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine (Ramstein format) in Berlin.

The German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius expressed "great satisfaction" that the meeting was again able to raise funds in support of Ukraine. He noted that contributions from different countries were difficult to compare because of differences in the size of their economies, but still acknowledged there was an "imbalance in contributions."

In the Priority Acquisition Facility for Ukraine (PURL), NATO countries and their allies are buying U.S. weapons for Kiev, including air defense against Russian strikes, in packages of $500 million. NATO estimates that Kiev will need at least $15 billion worth of purchases under the arrangement this year, reports DW.

Pistorius urged that support for Ukraine should not wane, even while the world's attention is focused on the Middle East and efforts to unblock the Strait of Hormuz. "One thing is clear: Russia is capitalizing on the current situation in the Middle East. Rising oil prices are filling Putin's military coffers - at least for now," the minister pointed out.

Mark Rutte again dismissed fears that war with Iran would reduce the flow of US arms supplies to Ukraine. The flow of supplies from the US continues, he reiterated his words from back in March.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov said that Belgium, Norway, Bulgaria and Estonia have made additional commitments for payments under the PURL mechanism, while British Defense Minister John Healey announced the delivery of 120,000 drones to Ukraine.

Healey emphasized the crucial role of drones on the battlefield: in March, they accounted for 96 percent of Russian army casualties, which reached a record 35,000 that month. "Drones have shaped the course of this war and will be a decisive factor in its outcome," the British minister said.

The German Defense Ministry said the previous day that Germany would transfer "several hundred missiles" to Ukraine for Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems. Pistorius clarified on April 15 that the deliveries would stretch over four years.

In addition, German manufacturer Diehl will supply Ukraine with additional launchers of the Iris-T anti-aircraft missile system. According to Kiev's data, we are talking about 36 such systems.
