Moldova Condemned Ex-head Of The Special Services, Recruited By The Belarusian KGB
Alexandru Balan

He was found guilty of divulging state secrets.

A court in Chisinau has sentenced in absentia the former deputy director of the Information and Security Service (ISS) Alexandru Balan to one and a half years in prison. He was found guilty of divulging state secrets, IPN reported, citing prosecutor Dumitru Shtefirtse.

The trial was held in closed mode, Balan took part in it via video link. He pleaded guilty and asked to consider his case in a simplified order.

The Czech intelligence service BIS considers him a member of the Belarusian intelligence network, created by the KGB of Belarus.

The Insider wrote that Alexander Balan during his tenure (2016-2019) in the framework of cooperation with the intelligence services of Ukraine was a liaison officer at the General Staff of the AFU. He was recalled from Ukraine for unsatisfactory performance, but he refused to return to Moldova.

Alexandru Balan is currently under house arrest in Romania, where he is being tried for divulging state secrets. He was detained in September 2025 in Timisoara on charges of passing such data to Belarusian KGB officers.

According to Romanian media, he met twice with Belarusian intelligence officers in Budapest between 2024 and 2025.
