Italy's prime minister stood up for the pope.
US President Donald Trump has criticized Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni. In an interview with the newspaper Corriere della Sera, he said he was shocked because of the Italian prime minister's stance on war with Iran.
"I thought she was brave, but I was wrong. She, along with NATO, doesn't want to help us, doesn't want to help us get rid of Iranian nuclear weapons. She is not what she used to be, and Italy will never be the same: she, like the rest of Europe, is being killed by immigration," the American president said.
He also reacted to the fact that the Italian prime minister supported the Pope. The day before, Trump criticized Leo XIV, saying that the latter is "terrible on foreign policy" and shows weakness on crime. The pontiff, in turn, said he had no intention of arguing with the US president and emphasized that "someone has to stand up and say there is a better way out" while many innocent people are being killed. He was supported by Meloni, who called Trump's words unacceptable.
