Spanish Cabinet Approved The Legalization Of 500 Thousand Migrants

They will be given a residence permit and the right to work.

The Spanish government on Tuesday, April 14, approved a royal decree that begins the process of regularizing the estimated 500,000 illegal migrants living in the country.

"This is an act of normalization, of recognizing almost half a million people who are already part of our daily lives. It is also an act of justice and necessity. We recognize rights, but we also demand obligations. Those who are already part of our daily life must do so on equal terms, contributing to the sustainable development of our country," commented Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on his social networks.

The official Spanish government account on social network X emphasizes that the decision will affect people who have been in Spain continuously for 5 months until January 1, 2026, have no criminal record, and who "do not pose a threat to public order, security or public health."

Foreigners who have applied for international protection in Spain until December 31, 2025 and can prove that they have lived in the country for at least 5 months before that date will be able to obtain a 1-year renewable residence permit and a work permit. Children will be given documents immediately for 5 years. The authorities promise to consider all applications within three months, and the right to work applicants for legalization will receive a maximum of 15 days after submission of documents.
