Law enforcement officers seized 140,000 NZ Gold cigarettes.
On November 4 in Daugavpils, officers from the Latgale Regional Directorate of the Latvian State Police detained two Belarusian citizens: a train engineer and his assistant. The men are suspected of smuggling.
According to police, the train arrived in Daugavpils from Belarus, and while the train was moving, the crew threw packages of illegal cigarettes out of the locomotive. Law enforcement officers seized 140,000 NZ Gold cigarettes bearing excise stamps of the Republic of Belarus.

A criminal case has been opened regarding the smuggling under Part 3 of Article 190 of the Criminal Law of Latvia, which provides for liability for smuggling committed by an organized group or on a large scale. This offense is punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment, with or without confiscation of property. Probationary supervision for up to three years and a ban on engaging in certain activities or holding certain positions for up to five years are also possible.
The police intend to file a motion with the court on November 6 to have both detainees arrested. The investigation is ongoing.
