A federal court has barred U.S. President Donald Trump from proceeding with construction of a triumphal arch, which he had planned to erect at the entrance to Washington.
This was reported by The Washington Times.
The ruling was handed down by Judge Tanya Chutkan, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama and who, according to the publication, frequently engages in legal disputes with Trump. She stated that the administration skipped too many procedural steps in its rush to approve the arch project, which likely constitutes a violation of the Memorials Act.
“The temporary restraining order issued today prohibits the defendants from commencing construction or site preparation at the Memorial Ring,” she wrote in a 33-page ruling.
The request for the injunction was made by the state of Virginia and the District of Columbia, which filed a lawsuit challenging the project. Another lawsuit was also filed by a group of veterans.
The 250-foot-tall arch was to stand at the foot of the Memorial Bridge, which connects Washington’s monumental core with Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
