The president explained her decision.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu stated that she would support the country’s unification with Romania if the issue were put to a referendum. According to her, this stance is motivated by security concerns in light of the Russian threat. She made these remarks in an interview with a Hungarian newspaper Válasz Online.
According to Sandu, she is committed to ensuring that Moldova is safe and free. “Imagine that Russia is approaching your borders—you’ll have to look for solutions, even if they seem strange to you,” she said.
The president acknowledged that the idea of unification with Romania does not yet have sufficient support among the population. Therefore, the authorities are focusing on EU accession, which is supported by the majority of citizens.
When asked whether Moldova would be free as part of Romania, Sandu avoided giving a direct answer. She merely noted that the issue of sovereignty is a separate matter, and that Romania, unlike Russia, is a democratic country where citizens are free.
