The Democrats turned out to be unexpectedly competitive.

On Monday, on the eve of the U.S. midterm elections, Democrats are holding their final rallies in an effort to mobilize their voters.

Democrats hope that the election results will give them control of at least one chamber of Congress and, for the first time in two years, limit the political power of President Donald Trump, according to LRT.

The election campaign, which took place amid intense tension and mutual animosity, is concluding with rallies. In particular, Democratic Senate candidates who have become prominent figures in the campaign—James Talalico in Texas and Adam Hamilton in Kansas—are addressing their supporters.

For his final speech, Donald Trump chose the area by the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. This location has become one of the symbols of the 80-year-old president’s controversial efforts to reshape the American capital.

“We will win,” Trump declared on Sunday.

However, according to polls, Democrats are likely to take the House majority away from the Republicans. They also have a chance to win a majority in the Senate, which is currently controlled by Republicans.

Even a victory in the House of Representatives alone would give Democrats the ability to influence the passage of the federal budget and head influential committees that could investigate alleged misconduct within the Trump administration.

The Republicans’ loss of full control over Congress will put Trump in an unfamiliar position. The final two years of his presidency could be marked by high inflation, a protracted war with Iran, and Democratic investigations into his administration’s actions.

Even so, ten years after the start of the Trump political era, Democrats remain cautious about their chances of victory.

“Nauseating optimism”—that’s how Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock described the mood within the party in an interview with CNN.

Scorched-earth tactics

Republicans, led by Donald Trump, used harsh rhetoric during the campaign, calling Democrats communists. They openly called Abdul El-Sayed, the Muslim Senate candidate from Michigan, a terrorist.

Speaking to supporters in Iowa on Sunday, Trump called Democrats “extreme and dangerous radicals” who, he said, “will take your property” and allow migrants to “rob, rape, and terrorize.”

However, according to polls, dissatisfaction with Trump’s political style and actions is growing among Americans.

An NBC News poll released on Sunday showed that 60 percent of respondents disapprove of Trump’s performance. High prices are a particularly strong source of discontent; they have reportedly risen further amid the war with Iran, which has now been ongoing for eight months.

While a Democratic takeover of the House of Representatives appears highly likely, the outcome of the Senate race remains uncertain.

Only one-third of the 100 senators are up for election in these midterm elections. Initially, only a few of these seats were considered ones where Democrats had a good chance of winning.

However, the Democrats have proven unexpectedly competitive even in states that traditionally support Republicans. Therefore, according to pollsters, the race for control of the Senate is now virtually a toss-up.

A final poll by The New York Times and Siena College, released Sunday evening, showed that Democratic candidates are leading in all seven of the most competitive races. However, in five of those races, the lead is within the margin of error.

If the Democrats gain control of the Senate, they will be able to block Trump’s proposed lifetime appointments of federal judges, including to the Supreme Court.

Although Election Day is Tuesday, a record 54 million people have already voted early across the country.

About $11 billion, or roughly 9.6 billion euros, has been spent on political advertising during these midterm elections. A significant portion of these funds came from a few large individual donors.

A close ally of Trump Elon Musk, who led the so-called “DOGE” initiative, aimed at drastically reducing the federal bureaucracy, contributed nearly half a billion dollars—about 436 million euros—to support the re-election of Republicans.
