Flavio Bolsonaro issued a statement after fleeing to the United States.
Former Brazilian presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, who left the country the day before, published an address to the nation, confirming that he is in the United States with his family.
“I address the Brazilian people and the international community as the true president of Brazil. First and foremost, I would like to thank President Milei (Javier Milei, the president of Argentina. — Ed.) for his courage, sense of justice, and commitment to the rule of law, as well as President Trump and the wonderful American people for welcoming me. This is the land of freedom and of brothers who share the same values as the decent people in my country. “President Trump is a great defender of free speech,” Bolsonaro said.
The former presidential candidate claimed that the recent elections in Brazil were rigged. The politician also reiterated that he had no intention of leaving his homeland, but “knew exactly how it would all end.” He emphasized that there is no arrest warrant for him because he “has committed no crime,” but that there is a “politically motivated witch hunt.”
“I want to make this clear: I did not flee Brazil—I left for the sake of Brazil. I left the state of emergency so that I could become the leader my people deserve, because if I had remained silent, been imprisoned, and subjected to censorship, like my father, I would not have been able to become such a leader, and we would have been doomed to institutional theater with a neutered opposition controlled by a Supreme Court overflowing with the regime’s lackeys. “I am not the first to have to fight for my own country from afar,” Bolsonaro said.
The politician added that in the coming days he would address the Brazilian people regularly and present a “strategy for mobilizing the opposition”.
As a reminder, Reuters reported yesterday, citing two sources, that Flavio Bolsonaro had left the country and headed to the United States after suffering a defeat in the country’s recent presidential election.
In Brazil’s presidential election, which took place in two rounds on October 4 and 25, 2026, incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva emerged victorious. He secured victory in the second round. Lula da Silva received 51.79% of the vote, while Flávio Bolsonaro received 48.21%.
