Portnikov Explained What A Democratic Victory Would Mean For Ukraine

According to Portnikov, the bill in support of Ukraine has already been passed by the House of Representatives, and a majority of senators are ready to support it. However, the bill has not yet been brought to a vote in the Senate due to the position of Republican Majority Leader John Thune, whom the journalist considers to be beholden to Trump.

“In the Senate, the majority supports him. There’s no problem with the fact that most senators would vote for it. But the Republican majority leader in the Senate, Senator Thune, who is beholden to Trump, is not bringing this bill to a vote. That is the only reason it isn’t being voted on,” Portnikov explained.

He noted that under different circumstances in the Senate, the bill could have been put to a vote. Even if Trump had refused to sign it, Congress could have overridden a presidential veto with enough votes.

According to the journalist, a Democratic majority in the Senate could give Congress more opportunities to make decisions that reflect the sentiments of the American public and provide support for Ukraine.
