Estonian Defense Minister Martin Herem stated that, as part of the creation of the Baltic Defense Belt in Ida-Viru County, the country plans to build approximately 150 bunkers.
This was reported by ERR.
“As part of the construction of the Baltic Defense Belt, for example, in Ida-Viru County (a region of Estonia located on the border with Russia), there are plans to build approximately 150 bunkers. “100 of them will be located on state-owned land, and about 50 on municipal or private land,” said Herem.
He added that regarding the bunkers to be built on private land, the authorities will need to reach an agreement with the landowners. To resolve this dilemma, possible solutions include paying compensation for the inconvenience, leasing the land, or purchasing it.
“But, to the best of my knowledge, there are currently no large-scale plans for the state to acquire a more extensive belt of land,” the minister clarified.
Herem also noted that the Estonian Ministry of Defense has approved a youth policy under which, over the next four years, funding will be increased for the activities of the Noored Kotkad and Kodutütred organizations and for drone pilot training. In addition, greater attention will be paid to national defense issues as part of the instruction in other subjects in the elementary school curriculum.
According to him, these activities will take place throughout the country, and there are no specific plans to limit them to Ida-Viru County.
“As for what exactly is planned in Northeastern Estonia—whether there are any specific plans for this region in particular—I honestly cannot say. For the most part, these plans cover all of Estonia,” he concluded.
