The Russian dictator spoke about his “close ties” with the founder of SpaceX.

Russian Federation dictator Vladimir Putin, speaking at the “Russia–Africa” summit, called Elon Musk “a truly brilliant person” and announced that Russia is in contact with the American businessman, according to Vedomosti.

“We are working closely with our American partners, in particular with Mr. Musk, because in orbit it is very important not to interfere with one another and to maintain a certain discipline and order,” Putin said.

The dictator praised the American for his vision and contribution to the development of space technology. “Elon Musk is a genius—simply a true genius. How many of those [satellites] does he have in orbit? More than 5,000, while we’re only taking our first steps,” Putin said, referring to the Russian “Dawn” project, announced as a response to Musk’s Starlink system.

Putin’s remarks coincided with a conflict between the American multibillionaire and the Ukrainian government, which centered precisely on the aforementioned satellite communication system. Initially, on October 11, amid the growing rapprochement between Donald Trump and Putin, Musk supported the U.S. president and wrote on the social media platform “X” that “Zelenskyy has gone too far,” alluding to Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries. The Ukrainian president countered this by stating that Trump and Musk cannot stop Putin, which is why they are “putting pressure on others.” In response, the American businessman called on Zelenskyy to resign and blamed him for the fact that “the slaughter continues.”

Musk’s statements coincided with a series of outages in the Starlink/Starshield system, which Ukrainian troops use on the front lines; the outages first came to light on October 14. The businessman took a contradictory stance during the crisis. He claimed that he could not cut off communications to Kyiv because the Starshield system—intended for military use—is allegedly controlled by U.S. authorities, while simultaneously accusing Ukraine of violations in its use of the service. Moreover, The Telegraph’s sources in the White House explicitly named Musk as the main instigator of the Starshield shutdown for Ukrainian soldiers.

Ultimately, on October 23, Trump announced that Musk had restored Kyiv’s access to Starlink/Starshield, though he declined to provide specific details about the process. It was not until the following day that the Ukrainian side confirmed that the satellite communications, funded by Poland, were operating without interruption on the front lines.
