The student movement is calling for an end to corruption and for change.

Serbia will hold early parliamentary elections on October 25. Former President Aleksandar Vučić is seeking to become prime minister, while students leading the protest movement are demanding an end to corruption and changes in the country, according to Reuters.

The early elections, announced by Vučić in September, are taking place after nearly two years of student protests. They began following a tragedy at the train station in Novi Sad in 2024, when 16 people died after a canopy collapsed. The demonstrations then evolved into a large-scale movement against corruption and the rise of authoritarian tendencies in the country.

On Election Day, long lines formed at polling stations in Serbian cities and towns. According to the polling organization CeSID and the research firm Ipsos, voter turnout stood at 27.3% as of 11:00 a.m. By comparison, 15.1% of voters had cast their ballots at the same time during the 2023 parliamentary elections.

Vucic himself also waited a long time before casting his ballot: he waited in line for nearly two hours. Polling stations are scheduled to close at 8:00 p.m. local time, and the first preliminary results are expected approximately two hours after voting ends.

Who Is Running for Office

Vučić stepped down as president after his second term to run for prime minister again. He remains an influential figure in Serbian politics, and his supporters credit him with the country’s economic modernization.

During his time in office, Serbia built new highways, railroads, schools, and hospitals. He also promises to raise pensions and public sector salaries and to invest in the healthcare system.

In foreign policy, he maintains ties with China and Russia, while Serbia continues to pursue EU membership.

The student movement has focused on fighting corruption and improving education. Its list includes 250 candidates, among them teachers, actors, and farmers. The list is headed by cardiologist Ilya Srdanović. At the same time, it is not yet known who will become prime minister if the movement wins.

Polls predicted a close race. The teacher stated that he would accept the election results. At the same time, observers reported possible violations related to voter rolls and the secrecy of the ballot.
