Freedom House: Belarus—A Country With An Unfree Internet

Our country finds itself surrounded by rogue regimes.

The international organization Freedom House has published its annual report, “Freedom on the Net 2026,” in which it assessed the state of the internet in 38 countries.

Belarus scored 21 out of 100 and was classified as a country with an unfree internet. Only Cuba (19 points), Russia (16), and China, Iran, and Myanmar—all with 9 points—scored lower. In last year’s report, Belarus also scored 21 points.

Estonia, Costa Rica, Taiwan, Australia, France, South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Argentina received the highest scores and were classified as countries with a free internet. Ukraine ended up in the middle of the list, among countries with a partially free internet.

This year, Freedom House suspended its assessment of 34 countries, so the number of countries in the ranking was reduced by nearly half.

According to the organization’s findings, internet freedom worldwide has been declining for 16 consecutive years.

It should be noted that on January 24, 2018, the Lukashenko regime blocked the independent website Charter97.org in Belarus.
