The decision was made at the last moment.
Hafiz al-Assad, son of deposed Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, has posted a video on Telegram in which he confirms that the page is indeed his. Assad, who captured himself on a Moscow street, says he has no pages on other social networks, newsru.co.il wrote.
The other day, the same page published a post in English and Arabic in which Hafiz described the circumstances of the family's flight to Moscow. He said that the flight was unplanned, and that the presidential palace only began to worry when it learnt that government forces had abandoned Hama. Before that, gunfire had been heard in the capital, but it was not seen as anything extraordinary.
No one thought of leaving Damascus, but at night a high-ranking Russian representative arrived at Assad's house and asked him to move to Latakia for a few days - they said that it was becoming dangerous in the capital, and that military operations could be led from the seaside city.
When they arrived at the airport at 3 a.m., they saw other members of the Assad clan, including the brother of President Mahir Assad. They travelled by Russian plane to the Hmeimim airbase. There they received information that government troops were leaving their positions. According to Hafiz, at that time the rebels began shelling the base, which was under Russian control, with kamikaze drones.
In the afternoon of 8 December, Russian command officials reported that there was an imminent danger of the base being captured. After a meeting with the Russian side, a decision was made to fly to Moscow.
