The Russian dictator also noted that the Kremlin is not afraid of the US refusal to extend the START Treaty.
Russia is testing new weapons and will soon announce it, so it is not afraid of the US refusal to extend the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty (START-III), which expires in February 2026.
That's how Russian ruler Vladimir Putin responded to a question about the fate of the treaty and whether Russia receives "signals through closed channels" from the US about its future fate. The question was asked at a press conference following his visit to Dushanbe.
"The START Treaty - are there signals from Washington? We have contact through the Foreign Ministry and the State Department. Will a few months be enough to extend it? Enough, we need good will," the president replied.
Putin added that if the U.S. abandons this treaty, Russia has new weapons.
"No trouble - we have somewhere to move, we have the newest weapons, we are developing them," he continued.
"I think in the near future there will be an opportunity to report on the new weapons we once announced. If not, then no - it will be a pity, because there will be nothing left at all," Putin said.
