Forbes: British Prime Minister Challenges The Kremlin

Moscow was in an uproar after the politician's visit to Kyiv.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham arrived in Ukraine on Independence Day and brought plans for jointly producing long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles. London has declared its readiness to help Ukraine set up local assembly lines to produce these missiles, challenging Russian leader Vladimir Putin, writes Forbes.

Ukrainian and French defense technology experts are set to work on establishing production facilities in Ukraine. The missile in question is described as a weapon capable of striking protected and fortified targets.

Bernham’s visit took place a few days after Russia threatened the U.K. with “consequences” for its military support of Ukraine. The Russian Embassy in the UK stated that Ukraine’s use of British drones to strike targets deep inside Russia allegedly indicates a deliberate escalation on London’s part.

“London’s actions will inevitably have consequences for which it will have to answer,” Russian diplomats said.

Moscow also warned that the more active the UK’s support for Ukraine is, the higher the price London will pay.

Part of a hybrid war

According to researcher Peter Dickinson, Russia’s threats are part of Moscow’s long-running hybrid war against countries that support Ukraine.

He noted that Russia has already resorted to various forms of pressure on European countries. Among such actions, the expert cited an incident involving a drone carrying explosives near NATO and Ukrainian military aircraft, the launch of a cruise missile toward Polish territory, and the planning of the assassination of a U.S. citizen in Poland.

According to Dickinson, U.S. intelligence agencies have even predicted the possibility of a limited armed attack by Russia on one of the NATO member states in 2026.

At the same time, the expert believes that Moscow is trying to avoid a direct, full-scale war with the Alliance. Its goal, according to the expert, is to divide NATO and test the West’s reaction.

“An escalation to more direct military aggression remains unlikely,” Dickinson said.

Burnam Declared Unwavering Support for Ukraine

During his visit to Kyiv, the British prime minister emphasized that Russia’s threats will not change London’s position.

“The United Kingdom fully supports Ukraine’s independence, and Russia’s threats only strengthen the UK’s resolve,” Bernam said.

According to him, London will not withdraw its support for Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved.

The Prime Minister also stated that the UK, together with France, is working to form a defensive “Coalition of the Willing,” which is intended to ensure Ukraine’s long-term security.

According to the text provided, Burnam also announced the allocation of 25 billion pounds in funding, of which 16 billion pounds are to be directed toward military aid and 5.6 billion toward non-military support.

Russia May Intensify Sabotage Operations Against the UK

Dickinson predicts that Moscow may continue to escalate its hybrid campaign against the UK. Among possible next steps, he cited sabotage against British infrastructure and facilities related to support for Ukraine, as well as more targeted assassinations.

The expert recalled previous instances in which Russian intelligence agencies were accused of attempting to eliminate opponents of the Kremlin on British soil. Specifically, these include the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko with polonium and the attempted assassination of Sergei Skripal using the nerve agent “Novichok.”

According to Dickinson, Moscow’s current threats may be directed primarily at British society:
“It seems the main goal is to intimidate the British public and influence it so that it does not continue to support Ukraine.”

He emphasized that the number of such incidents has been rising in recent months, and Russia is becoming increasingly bold.
“Every new incident is a test. Russia is watching NATO’s reaction,” Dickinson noted.
In his view, this escalation is bringing Europe closer to a point where a mistake by either side could create the risk of a direct military confrontation with Russia.
