A story about how a man from Minsk rented his apartment to a young woman from Rostov.
Threads user alaksandrpetrovic6402026 shared how his interaction with a Russian woman turned out.
“I met a girl from Rostov online,” he writes. “She was moving to Minsk, so I decided to rent her my empty apartment. And that’s when it started: ‘Everyone in Belarus is so slow,’ ‘Belarus this,’ ‘Belarus that.’ I calmly explained: the country is called Belarus. That’s the official name. You know what changed? Nothing. It was as if she were deliberately repeating ‘Belorussia’ in every sentence. I kept quiet. I thought: well, it’s just a difference in mentality. As long as she pays on time.
On the due date, I called—she wasn’t reachable. I messaged her—her account was blocked everywhere. I went to the apartment, and it was completely empty. The TV, microwave, dishes, and even the linens had “left” with the girl.
Of course, I filed a police report, and I retrieved the footage from the building’s security cameras (the way she carried my belongings out in suitcases is a masterpiece in its own right).
But I’ve learned the moral of the story for life: if someone doesn’t respect you and your country from the very start—don’t rent to them. Minsk, by the way, is wonderful. And Belarus—it’s Belarus. Get it through your heads already!”
Social media users expressed sympathy for the Minsk resident and shared their own experiences interacting with Russians. The website Charter97.org features some of the comments:
— One guy said that as soon as a Russian showed up in the group, theft would immediately follow. Probably true—it’s in their blood.
— The strangest thing that’s happened to me so far while handing over my apartment was when, during the inspection, I discovered that the foam padding had disappeared from the sofa seat. Literally, only the plywood was left. It’s a mystery to me. Good luck to you!
— What do I know about Russians? That you should stay as far away from them as possible.
— Well, at least the apartment is still there. I read today that a Russian couple rented an apartment and then sold it.They tricked him into handing it over under the pretext that their employer needed the apartment documents for reporting purposes; he, being an honest man, gave them what they asked for—and that was the end of it; who knows how the story will end.
