Turkish F-16s Will Provide Round-the-clock Air Defense For Russia's Neighboring Countries

The aircraft will respond to any potential violations of NATO allies' airspace.

Turkey is once again deploying F-16 fighter jets to Estonia. For several months, they will provide round-the-clock air defense for the Baltic states as part of a NATO mission.

Five aircraft and 76 military personnel from the 181st Squadron, known as the “Panther Squadron,” will arrive at Amari Air Base.

The Turkish contingent, based in Diyarbakir, will carry out the mission from August through November. Currently, the crews will be on round-the-clock combat duty in Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) mode to respond promptly to any potential airspace violations over the Baltic region.

As explained by the Turkish Air Force command, this mission is part of NATO’s peacetime air defense system and is intended to protect the allies’ airspace.

This primarily concerns Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which do not have their own fighter aircraft capable of performing such missions.

While on duty, the Turkish F-16s will remain on constant standby, ready to take off immediately in the event of unidentified aircraft or a potential airspace violation. The crews will also participate in joint exercises and training with other NATO allies.
