Warsaw Bids Farewell To Writer Svetlana Kurs

On Sunday, Warsaw bid farewell to the writer Svetlana Kurs. Her family, friends, and devoted readers came to see her off on her final journey. The writer’s body was cremated.

Svetlana died on July 20 at the age of 54. She had been battling cancer for over a year and had been in the hospital recently.

Svetlana Kurs was born in the village of Zagale in the Lyuban District of the Minsk Region. A journalist, writer, and translator, she graduated from the Faculty of Philology at Belarusian State University in 1994. She worked for independent Belarusian media outlets and contributed to the magazines ARCHE and “Dzeyaslous.”

In 2013, she was a fellow at the Villa Aurora and Thomas Mann House literary residency in Germany. In 2018, she won the “Volnae Slova” creative contest organized by the Belarusian Association of Journalists.

She is the author of the books *Shlyakh Drobnay Svolachy* (2008) and *Pa shto idzesh, voucha?* (2020), which has been translated into several European languages.

In 2021, she was awarded the Jerzy Gedroitz Prize for her book *Pa shto idzesh, voucha?*.

Svetlana Kurs was 54 years old and had been battling cancer. She had been living in Poland for the past few years.
