Four units will guard the border with Belarus and Kaliningrad.

The Polish Ministry of National Defense has established a new military unit to protect the border, said Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, according to a press release from the Polish Ministry of National Defense.

According to the defense minister, the new unit will consist of four brigades, which will manage the infrastructure of the “Eastern Shield” — a project by the Polish authorities to build fortifications along the border with Belarus and Kaliningrad, including trenches, concrete barriers, drones, and mines.

The unit’s mission will be to guard and defend the border, cooperate with border guards, manage infrastructure, fortifications, and warehouses, “as well as cooperating with the civilian population and local authorities to ensure the best possible preparedness and security of the area, operational readiness, and the provision of assistance when necessary,” said Kosiniak-Kamysz.

The unit will also cooperate with the Border Guard, which is under the jurisdiction of the Polish Ministry of the Interior and previously provided border security, as well as with other security services.
