Both of these facilities have previously been targeted by Ukraine.
On the night of June 24, drones struck strike on the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant in Orenburg, Russia, where a fire likely broke out. Additionally, according to reports from local social media groups, a local helium plant may have been hit, writes New Voice.
Several fire hotspots were detected in the industrial zone of the gas processing plant, according to the monitoring channel Exilenova+, citing satellite data on abnormal thermal activity.
Overnight, Orenburg Airport suspended operations due to a drone attack; flights were temporarily halted there.
The governor of the Orenburg Region Evgeny Solntsev warned of possible “disruptions due to a breach of security.”
On the morning of June 24, he confirmed a “massive drone attack.” Solntsev stated that “several UAVs were shot down over an industrial facility” in Orenburg, but did not explicitly name the gas processing plant. At the same time, he acknowledged that “emergency services are on the scene.”
The Telegram channel Supernova+, citing reports from local residents, specifies that two plants may have been attacked at once: the Orenburg gas processing plant and the helium plant.
Both of these facilities have previously been targeted by Ukraine. They are part of the natural gas processing chain and are affiliated with the Gazprom group of companies within the Orenburg Gas Chemical Complex, Supernova+ notes.
In particular, Gazprom Dobycha Orenburg, which owns the helium plant, operates fields and production facilities. The plant’s mission is to extract and process valuable components from natural gas, specifically helium.
Meanwhile, Gazprom Processing manages the Orenburg Gas Processing Plant, where gas undergoes comprehensive processing to produce marketable gas, sulfur, gas condensate, and other products.
On May 12, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a successful strike by the Ukrainian Armed Forces on Russian gas industry facilities in the Orenburg region, more than 1,500 km from the border.
The Orenburg helium plant was also struck in August 2025. At the time, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense clarified that this was the only helium production facility in the Russian Federation and one of the largest in Europe, with an annual processing capacity of approximately 15 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Helium is widely used in rocket production, the space industry, and the aviation industry.
