The Belarusians suggested deporting him.
Alexander Tuman — a popular Russian automotive blogger, host, road tripper, and husband of the well-known blogger Nastya Tuman — complained on TikTok that his rental car was impounded in Belarus for speeding.
“I arrived in Belarus and rented a car. A Tiguan like this one. I drove just a little faster than allowed here, than what’s specified in the contract—in areas where there are no cameras. I didn’t go much over the limit, and the car was completely immobilized,” he says.
Belarusians familiar with car rental terms noted that the blogger most likely lied when he claimed it was a minor speeding violation, and also gave him some advice. The website Charter97.org quotes some comments:
— You were most likely warned even before the car was impounded that you shouldn’t violate traffic laws. And this is specified in the contract. But you apparently thought: “Who do you think you are? I paid for the rental—so I can do whatever I want.” As you can see, that’s not the case. One question: Why embarrass yourself online?
— Great! Get ready for fines from the rental company and from the Belarusian traffic police when you leave the country!
— As someone who ran a car rental business in Minsk for 12 years, I can say with full responsibility: you went way over the limit. Rental companies only have GPS sensors for speeding, and they start sending notifications once you’re 20 km/h over. Otherwise, we’d go crazy from the sheer volume of messages. And cutting the car’s engine, especially while it’s moving and the steering wheel locks up on the road, is a last resort for particularly reckless drivers.
— This is all terrible. I hope they’ll also ban entry for five years.
— Drive however you want at home, but when you come to visit, please behave like a human being, especially on the road.
— Be thankful they didn’t deport you back to your homeland.
— Respect to the authorities! They’ll teach the Russians how to drive. Welcome to the author. But remember: Big Brother is watching you.
— They should have deported you too.
— What did you think? That anything goes here? No way—they’ve found a way to deal with you hotheads. They should install the same device in your personal cars too. Don’t speed, especially in a foreign country.
— Speed back home. And don’t come here anymore!
— If your car was blocked, you were clearly speeding over 130 km/h—most likely 140–150. So who’s right and who’s wrong? And why are you unhappy?
— You shouldn’t speed at all in Belarus; you’re here as a guest—behave yourself and respect our rules!
