Israel Has Refused To Transfer The "Iron Dome" To Ukraine

In 2023, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to authorize the transfer of batteries from Israel’s “Iron Dome” air defense system to Ukraine, even though they were funded by the U.S. government. This was reported by the newspaper The Washington Post.

According to the publication, the initiative to transfer these systems to Ukraine came from U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham. He proposed using “Iron Dome” batteries to protect Ukrainian cities and the civilian population from missile strikes.

However, Netanyahu blocked this possibility. As the WP notes, even though the systems were paid for by the U.S., under a co-production agreement, Israel has the final say on their use and transfer to other countries.

It is also reported that during Senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral, which took place this week, a tense exchange occurred between Netanyahu and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The Israeli Embassy explained the Israeli government’s position by citing concerns about a possible technology leak. According to representatives of the diplomatic mission, there was a risk that the transferred systems could fall into Iran’s hands.

In addition, the Israeli Embassy stated that, instead of the “Iron Dome,” Israel returned Patriot missile systems to the U.S. so that they could be transferred to Ukraine to strengthen its air defense.
