The U.S. military disabled the Settebello, an oil tanker flying the Palau flag, in the Gulf of Oman. According to U.S. authorities, the vessel was carrying Iranian oil. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) accused the tanker of violating the naval blockade of Iran. Indian authorities condemned the attack, according to the ANI news agency. There were 24 Indian citizens on board.
“A U.S. military aircraft fired precision-guided munitions at the ship’s engine room after the crew repeatedly disregarded orders from U.S. military personnel,” CENTCOM stated on social media platform X. The agency added that since the start of the naval blockade on April 13, U.S. military personnel have disabled eight vessels and ordered 134 vessels to turn back.
The attack took place on June 9. A 21-year-old Indian citizen was rescued. Three are listed as missing. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs summoned U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Jason Mix to lodge a protest over the attack on the commercial vessel. The Indian Embassy in Oman is coordinating a search and rescue operation with the country’s authorities. “Attacks on commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must stop,” the Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated.
