Hungary Without Orbán: Meloni Is Already Negotiating With The New Leader

Hungary Without Orbán: Meloni Is Already Negotiating With The New Leader
Peter Magyar and Giorgia Meloni.

Italy's prime minister quickly found common ground with Magyar.

Italy and Hungary on Thursday showed that relations between the countries will remain close even after the end of the Viktor Orban era. His successor Peter Magyar and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni pledged to continue close cooperation, writes Politico.

Meloni welcomed Magyar to Rome and wrote in an X that relations between the two countries were "strong and well established" and that the two sides intended to "further strengthen them."

"Long live Italian-Hungarian friendship!" wrote Magyar in response.

The incoming Hungarian prime minister confirmed that he and Meloni had a "constructive and future-oriented meeting" and that the two sides' positions were "close on many issues."

Meloni has been one of Orban's closest allies on the European political scene since coming to power in 2022. They shared a number of policy priorities, notably a tough approach to illegal migration and Budapest's role as a kind of mediator between the Hungarian leader and the rest of the EU leaders on the war in Ukraine.

After winning elections last month and ending Orban's 16-year rule, Magyar has already changed parts of Budapest's foreign policy.

In particular, he has refused to block a €90 billion EU loan to Ukraine and traveled to Brussels, hoping to secure the unfreezing of a post-pandemic recovery fund for Hungary.

These funds were previously blocked due to Hungary's violation of EU norms during Orban's government.

Peter Magyar is expected to officially take office as prime minister on May 9.
