Sweden supported Ukraine's accession to NATO.
Sweden fully supports Ukraine's accession to NATO and the EU in the future. This was stated by the country's Defense Minister Paul Johnson during a speech at the GLOBSEC security forum in Prague, writes Politico.
According to Johnson, any European country has the right to join the alliance if it meets its requirements. The minister recalled the "open door" policy and emphasized that no state should have the right to block other countries from joining.
The Swedish minister sees Ukraine as an extremely valuable asset for European security in the future. The main arguments are the tremendous experience the Ukrainian military is gaining and the rapid development of their own weapons production. During the full-scale war, Kiev has simplified the rules for the defense business and opened the market to competition, which has allowed them to ramp up production of equipment at an incredible rate.
"Where else in Europe can you find 110 brigades? Where else is there such a system of innovation that Ukraine has shown? Where else can we find such industrial capacity?" - Jonson asked rhetorically.
At the same time, the head of the Swedish Defense Ministry admitted that there is still no unity within the alliance itself. The question of Ukraine's future remains one of the most pressing: some allies support Kiev, while others fear that too rapid accession will provoke Russia or draw NATO into direct conflict.
"I understand that there are allies who are against it. But if you ask about our position, it is exactly the same," the politician summarized.
