Trump Insists U.S. Will Take Nuclear Materials From Iran

Despite the Ayatollah's directive.

U.S. President Donald Trump pledged on Thursday that the United States would eventually withdraw Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium, despite a directive from the ayatollah reported by Reuters the day before (translated by The Moscow Times).

"We will get (enriched uranium). We don't need it, we don't want it. We'll probably destroy it after we get it, but we're not going to let them keep it," Trump told reporters at the White House. According to two senior Iranian sources, Iran's supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei has issued a directive that uranium enriched to near the level needed for a nuclear weapon should not be exported abroad.

A senior Iranian source told Reuters on Thursday that a broader peace deal with the United States had not yet been reached, but the two sides' positions had converged. The source added that nuclear enrichment and Tehran's control over the Strait of Hormuz remained key points of contention.
