As long as Russian oligarchs were able to make money from the war in Ukraine, they supported it, but as the situation has changed and now these people are suffering losses, they can hold Putin to account, one of the leaders of the Russian opposition Garry Kasparov has opined. It is the discontent of the elites that the head of the Kremlin should fear the most now.
The Russian oppositionist said this in an interview for "24 channels" on YouTube.
The politician explained how the Russian elite is "organized" "from the inside": "They understood that in these internal arrangements someone can always suffer, but in general the system worked properly. The interest of the elite, which sat on these money flows, was always respected. It is clear that there were some excesses when someone was dislodged, starting with Khodorkovsky and ending with the recent mop-up operations, but on the whole the ruling class, which lives on oil and gas rents, felt good about itself. And now I suspect that they are also discussing among themselves, for them it is a concrete question: what are we paying for?"
"It is clear, Ukrainians are being killed (people are killed in Africa too), but what are we paying for? This is a question that the late Prigozhin asked three years ago, not because he didn't want to kill Ukrainians or wage war, but because it was bad for business, but at the time the elite majority felt that war in Ukraine was a profitable endeavor. Again, everything is determined by economics," Kasparov explained.
