He could provide valuable information to U.S. authorities.
Alex Saab, a Venezuelan businessman and ally of the country's former president Nicolas Maduro, has been officially deported to the United States.
The Venezuelan migration agency SAIME said this, according to Reuters.
A law enforcement official said Saab was arrested in Caracas in February in a joint U.S.-Venezuelan operation. It came a month after U.S. special forces captured Maduro in Caracas.
Reuters said Saab's arrest and deportation signaled a new level of cooperation between U.S. and Venezuelan law enforcement under acting President Delcy Rodriguez.
The agency also notes that Saab, 54, a native of Colombia, was previously detained in Cape Verde in 2020 and held in U.S. custody on bribery charges. He was pardoned in 2023 in exchange for the release of Americans detained in Venezuela.
Sources said Saab could provide U.S. authorities with information that would strengthen their criminal case against Maduro.
What else is known
Remember that Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were flown to New York in January to face criminal charges, including conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism. But they deny the charges.
Few years ago, Saab and his wife lived in Italy. Attorney Luigi Giuliano, who is representing him, said he does not handle Saab's U.S. cases and could not confirm the deportation.
